Markets Ready for Lohri Festivities: Spike in Prices of Rewri, Peanuts, and Gajak

The Lohri festival, set to be celebrated on Monday, has brought vibrancy to the local markets in the city. Stalls and shops are stocked with peanuts, rewri, and gajak, while gift packs featuring these delicacies are attracting customers in large numbers.

According to vendors, sales of peanuts and gajak have doubled over the past week, leading to a significant price hike. A kilo of rewri, priced at ₹240 a month ago, now costs ₹280.

Gajak prices have risen from ₹160 to ₹230, with premium varieties ranging from ₹300 to ₹600 per kilo. Peanuts are being sold between ₹120 to ₹200 per kilo, depending on the vendor, while popcorn packets are priced at ₹20 to ₹30.

Localities like NIT 1, 5, Old Faridabad, Ballabhgarh, and Sectors 3, 7, 14, 15, and 16 are bustling with decorated stalls and enthusiastic shoppers. Rakesh, a peanut vendor in NIT 5, noted the festive vibe has boosted both footfall and sales.

Winter Apparel in Demand

Apart from traditional snacks, the festival has spurred demand for winter clothing like jackets, mufflers, and sweaters. Manoj Arora, a garment shop owner in NIT 1, stated that customers are flocking to buy winter essentials ahead of the celebrations.

Customer Voices

Aanchal Arora shared that her family celebrates Lohri with great enthusiasm every year and has already started shopping for clothes and festive items. Nishtha Dawar, who plans to celebrate with her family and friends, has also begun purchasing gifts and attire.

The festive spirit combined with the winter chill has created a lively atmosphere in the markets, making it a delightful time for shoppers and vendors alike.
